East Delhi civic body for the first time to send teachers abroad for skill based training

The East Delhi Municipal Corporation (EDMC) on Tuesday announced that it will fund training programs for teachers and school heads in foreign universities. The maximum assistance provided to each candidate will be ₹75 lakh.

A civic body official said, “Every year two teachers from schools coming under the jurisdiction of the EDMC will be sent for a one-year course in a reputed foreign university.”

Those who are not more than 42 years of age and who have more than 10 years of teaching experience – with a good performance record – can apply for the programme, which aims at skill improvement.

EDMC Commissioner Vikas Anand said candidates can choose from a range of subjects including public education, special education, development of education and use of digital technology in education.

The move is the first by a civic body in the city. Earlier, the Delhi government had implemented a similar initiative under which government school teachers were sent to foreign universities for skill-based training programmes.

“After the completion of their training, candidates will have to return and serve in EDMC schools or Delhi government schools for a period of at least 10 years,” said a civic body official.

Mr Anand said candidates can avail the benefits “only once in their entire career”, and if they fail to complete the course “they will have to refund the entire amount to the EDMC”.
