Easy to travel from Delhi to Gurugram! Check Out This New Underpass

The traffic load on the Delhi-Gurugram route is set to ease from now on, as a new underpass has been opened to the public this month. Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Saturday inaugurated the Benito Juarez Underpass here, which will help commuters traveling from Delhi airport to Gurugram overcome traffic bottlenecks and save time and fuel. The 1.2 km long Y-shaped underpass will also improve connectivity between the airport, Chanakyapuri and AIIMS.

According to Sisodia, the new tunnel/underpass in Delhi will reduce fuel consumption by 2181 liters per day and the national capital’s daily carbon emissions will reduce by 5 tonnes.

“Given the economic value of the time the underpass will save 18 crores for Delhiites. Many congratulations to all!” Sisodia said in a tweet in Hindi.

Here’s how the Benito Juarez Underpass will solve traffic problems for commuters from Delhi to Gurugram.

1. The The Rs 143.78 crore project comprises a Y-shaped 1,200-metre-long tunnel and a 670-metre skywalk.

2. Underpass starts from pass Delhi UniversitySri Venkateswara College and South Campus goes on Ring Road below Metro Station. One side of it opens on San Martin Road while the other on Ring Road towards Moti Bagh.

3. Vehicles coming from Delhi There will be relief from the jam under Rao Tularam flyover on Ring Road towards the airport from the underpass.

4. The skywalk will connect BJ Marg to South Campus Metro Station and Satya Niketan Marg with a foot-over bridge.

5. Passengers going from the airport to AIIMS, Chanakyapuri, Yeshwant Place and Gurugram will now be able to use this facility to clear the traffic bottlenecks on Outer Ring Road, Dhaula Kuan and Rao Tula Ram Marg.

6. The traffic load at Dhaula Kuan intersection is expected to be reduced by at least 25% from the tunnel.

The tunnel is decorated with artwork on the walls and ceiling. It is covered over the road to prevent rain water from entering.

Work on the project started in April 2015 and was to be completed in October 2017. It missed several deadlines due to relocation of utilities, the complex nature of construction work and the coronavirus-induced lockdown.
