ECI allows media persons to cast vote through postal ballot

According to an official statement from the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer’s office on Sunday, the Election Commission of India has allowed journalists to cast their votes through the postal ballot facility. Voting for 117 assembly seats in Punjab will be held on February 14 and counting of votes will be held on March 10.

The Election Commission has permitted media persons authorized by the Election Commission to exercise their franchise by using the postal ballot facility, the statement said. During a press conference, media persons had asked Punjab Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) Dr S Karuna Raju to include him among the absentee voters so that they can cast their vote using the postal ballot facility.

Raju said that any absentee voter who wants to vote by postal ballot paper, he has to apply to the Returning Officer giving all the necessary details and get the application verified by the Nodal Officer appointed by the concerned organization. He said that any voter opting for the postal ballot facility would not be able to cast his vote at the polling station.

Earlier, the commission had allowed voters aged 80 years and above, people with disabilities and COVID-19 patients to cast their votes through postal ballots. People involved in essential services including Food Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, Food Corporation of India, All India Radio, Doordarshan, Post and Telegraph, Railways, BSNL, Electricity, Health, Fire Services and Civil Aviation personnel can do this even if they are on duty Select the option of convenience, the statement is sad.

Meanwhile, the Postal Polling Stations (PVCs) in all the constituencies will remain open for three consecutive days before the date fixed for the state assembly elections. On each of the three days, PVC will be open from 9 am to 5 pm.
