Education Minister releases book on Indian knowledge system for engineering students, calls for it to take Indian education system towards ‘colonization’

The Minister of Education and Skill Development, Dharmendra Pradhan launched a textbook on ‘Introduction to Indian Knowledge Systems: Concepts and Applications’. This book attempts to fill in the gaps recently offered by AICTE to a required course on Indian Knowledge System (IKS). The textbook curriculum has been developed by the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Bangalore in association with Vyasa Yoga Sansthan, Bengaluru and Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth, Ernakulam. It is written by Professor B Mahadevan, IIM Bangalore and co-authored by Associate Professor Vinayak Rajat Bhat, Chanakya University, Bengaluru and Nagendra Pawan RN with the School of Vedic Knowledge Systems at Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth, Ernakulam.

Although the book has been developed primarily for use by engineering institutions, the structure and content lend itself readily to meeting a need in other university systems, including liberal arts, medicine, science, and management.

Speaking on the occasion, Pradhan expressed happiness that the authors have provided an academic framework to the Indian knowledge system in this book. Speaking about the Vedas, Upanishads and other Indian texts, he said that our ancient heritage is full of treasures that need to be preserved, documented and promoted. He also spoke about various examples of science based practices and knowledge from ancient India that we can still find relevant in the modern world.

The minister said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Indian education system is deteriorating. “While we adopt the good things from our ancient past, we must also be mindful of the problems of our society and create a future that harmonizes the knowledge of the past and contemporary issues. The solution lies in the Indian knowledge system.”

Moreover, the New Education Policy (NEP) has provided a clear trajectory for providing IKS in the higher education curriculum, making such a book a necessity in many higher education institutions of the country in the coming days.

The newly released IKS textbook will enable students to bridge the gap between the traditional and modern education system by providing an opportunity to students to reconnect with the past, build a holistic scientific temper and use it to pursue multidisciplinary research and innovation . Ministry said.

Established in October 2020, Indian System of Knowledge (IKS) is an innovative cell under the Ministry of Education (MoE) at AICTE, New Delhi. It seeks to promote interdisciplinary research on all aspects of IKS, preserve and disseminate IKS for further research and social applications, the rich heritage and traditional knowledge of our country in the fields of art and literature, agriculture, basic science, engineering actively involved in the spread of and technology, architecture, management, economics, etc.
