Election Commission may announce Gujarat election schedule this week

New Delhi: The Election Commission may announce the schedule of Gujarat Assembly elections this week.

Citing the tradition adopted in 2017, the Election Commission had not announced the Gujarat election schedule along with the Himachal Pradesh election dates earlier this month.

In Himachal Pradesh, where polling will be held in a single phase on November 12, the counting of votes will take place on December 8.

The commission had clearly indicated that the counting of votes for Gujarat would also be held on December 8, keeping the date of counting of votes for Himachal Pradesh after a month.

In 2017, elections were announced in both the states on different dates, but the counting of votes took place simultaneously on 18 December.

After the announcement of the Himachal election schedule, the floods in Gujarat prompted the Election Commission to hold elections in the state.

According to the Election Commission website, assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh were held simultaneously in at least 1998, 2007 and 2012.

The term of the 182-member Gujarat Assembly ends on February 18, 2023.
