Out of the total 182 assembly seats in the state, 89 seats will go to polls on December 1 and the remaining 93 seats on December 5.

He said political parties should explain why they selected candidates with criminal background. He also said that through the ‘Know Your Candidate’ app, voters will be informed about all the details including criminal history and money of all the candidates.

“If the voters see any untoward activity like use of muscle power or money power, they can use the c-vigil application to register a complaint from the booth itself,” he said.

“As a unique initiative for the convenience of the voters, a polling station will be set up in a shipping container with AMF for 217 voters at Alibet in Bharuch district,” the CEC said.

“In Gujarat, over 4.9 crore voters will be served by the Election Commission of India. There are 4.6 lakh voters for the first time,” Mr Kumar said.

Gujarat will have over 51,000 polling stations for the upcoming elections. “For a better voting experience, 1,274 polling stations will be managed entirely by women polling and security staff,” the Election Commissioner said.

The term of the 182-member Gujarat Assembly is set to end on February 18 next year.

“Since 2017, there has been a 100% increase in transgender voters in Gujarat. There are 1,417 third gender voters in the state. We are also trying to reach out to some red-light areas,” he added.

Gujarat has a 182-member assembly and the BJP had achieved a sixth successive victory in the last elections by winning 99 seats, while the Congress had won 77 seats. In percentage terms, the BJP got 49.05 per cent of the valid votes, while the Congress got 42.97 per cent of the votes.

After the assembly elections, the Congress witnessed several defections and the BJP increased its strength in the House to 111. The strength of the Congress increased to 62.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has set its eyes on Gujarat and has already entered election mode. Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has made several visits to Gujarat to make inroads for AAP in the state after its successful entry into Punjab.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been visiting Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh frequently to inaugurate and launch several projects.

Also, these elections, along with a few more elections in other states in 2023, are seen as crucial in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, when PM Modi and the BJP will bid for their third consecutive government at the Centre.
