Electoral reform bill linking Aadhaar with voter ID passed in Rajya Sabha

The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday passed a bill – the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2021 – to link voter list data with Aadhaar. The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha on Monday amid protests from the opposition, including the Congress.

Conducted by Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, the Election Laws (Amendment) Bill 2021 was passed by a voice vote in the Lok Sabha after a brief discussion during which some opposition members demanded that it be sent to a parliamentary panel for examination.

After the bill was passed in the lower house, Rijiju said the Election Law (Amendment) Bill will allow linking of voter list with Aadhaar card and it will be optional, not mandatory, but it will help us weed out fake voters.

“The Election Laws (Amendment) Bill proposes to replace the word ‘wife’ with ‘spouse’ to make the Act (Representation of the People Act 1951) gender-neutral. It will also expand the limits of election premises acquisition.”

“Even after 18 years, the system said that if they could not register on January 1 (the year of the revision of the electoral roll), they would have to wait a full year to exercise their voting rights. 4 qualifying dates. To register as a voter,” Rijiju said.

The Bill also seeks to allow Electoral Registration Officers to obtain Aadhaar numbers from persons already included in the electoral rolls for the purpose of authentication of entries in the electoral rolls and to identify those registered with the same person’s names in the electoral rolls. more than one constituency or more than once in the same constituency.”
