A female elephant, which had strayed into an agricultural field, was electrocuted to death in Doddabargi village, adjacent to the Hediyala range of Bandipur Tiger Reserve.

The incident came to light on Friday and senior officials of the Forest Department, who reached the spot after getting the information, said that the accused Gopal had illegally drawn electricity from the power lines to save his farm from the attack of wild animals.

Officials said the elephant was found dead in his field after coming in contact with a power line. Another case is also pending against the accused alleging the death of another female elephant under similar circumstances on August 16, 2018.

The case was registered under the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972, and is being heard at the Additional District and Sessions Court, Mysuru.
