Elon Musk is now three times richer than Warren Buffett

Tesla Inc.’s latest rally marks a new milestone for co-founder Elon Musk’s wealth: It now eclipses famed investor Warren Buffett’s fortune by a factor of three.

Musk’s net worth rose by $24 billion to $335.1 billion on Monday, as shares of the electric automaker jumped 8.5% in New York. It surpassed Amazon.com Inc’s Jeff Bezos as the world’s richest person by $143 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Berkshire Hathaway Inc.’s chairman Buffett is ranked 10th with a net worth of $104.1 billion.

Up and down Tesla’s shareholder roster, Luck balloons. Singapore-based retailer Leo Koguan emerged as the company’s third-largest individual shareholder last week, ranking him in wealth with a net worth of $12.1 billion. Larry Ellison, who spent 44 years building software maker Oracle Corp., has only been a major investor in Tesla since 2018, but his stake is now worth $18.1 billion, about a quarter of the value of his Oracle holding.

Buffett’s prodigious altruism helps explain the growing gap between him and Musk’s fortunes. The value investor donates a portion of his Berkshire stock each year to various charitable organizations, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Buffett, 91, said in June that his gifts over the past 16 years have totaled $41 billion.

Musk, 50, emphasized philanthropy over the weekend on Twitter, responding to the United Nations’ World Food Program director, who challenged billionaires like Musk to take steps to stop starvation. Musk responded by saying that he would sell $6 billion worth of Tesla stock “right now” if the UN agency could figure out how it would use the money to solve world hunger.
