Popular Odia singer and music director Praful Kar passed away here on Sunday after suffering from respiratory problems.

He was 83 years old and is survived by wife and two sons. Kar’s songs have enriched over 70 Oriya films over six decades.

Born on February 16, 1939 in Puri, Kar had early exposure to the world of music. His elder brother Khetramohan Kar was a skilled tabla player and hence musicians and singers frequented his house. He was attracted towards music and singing since childhood.

After completing his education from SCS College, Puri and Utkal University, he started learning from great musicians and gurus like Markandiya Mohapatra, K Aditya Narayan and JVS Rao.

At the age of 21, he got a contract to sing in All India Radio. Kar made a mark in the field of music and playback singing. And his songs have become immortal among Oriya music followers. For six decades, the lead singer enthralled generations of Oriya.

He started his career as a singer in 1962 with the Odia film Sri Sri Patita Paban, In 1975, he became the composer in the film love of a mother Which became an instant hit. He received the State Film Award for a record six times. In 2015, he was awarded the Padma Shri award in the field of arts.

He was endowed with extraordinary talent and his works often reflected creativity. I extend my condolences to his family members.”

The Odisha government announced that his last rites would be performed with full state honours. Two ministers will attend the funeral in Puri.
