England coach Chris Silverwood resigns after Ashes defeat

An interim coach to be appointed ahead of next month’s three Tests in West Indies

Chris Silverwood stepped down as England cricket coach, becoming the second significant departure after the team’s humiliating Ashes series loss in Australia.

England’s director of cricket Ashley Giles stepped down on Wednesday in the wake of the men’s team’s 4-0 loss to Australia.

“The last two years have been very demanding but I have really enjoyed my time with the team,” Silverwood said.

“I leave with good memories and now I look forward to spending some quality time at home with my family and embarking on the next chapter.” An interim coach will be appointed ahead of the three Tests in the West Indies next month.

“During his time in this role, Chris has given absolutely everything it takes to make it a success,” said England and Wales Cricket Board chief executive Tom Harrison.

“He is a very honest person who players and staff alike have enjoyed working with.

“Under Chris, England’s men’s white-ball teams are ranked first and second in the world, while he led the Test team in several series including South Africa and Sri Lanka. He has led the England men’s team with great resilience and empathy during an incredibly challenging period for England cricket, and he deserves our sincere thanks and gratitude.
