The enrollment of women in the electoral rolls was in line with the census sex ratio, with female voters making up more than 48 per cent of the total Indian electorate, the Lok Sabha was informed on Friday. Responding to a question on low enrollment of women in the electoral rolls, Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju said that according to the Election Commission, the total number of voters in India is 95,24,81,459 (95.24 crore). Out of this, the total number of male voters is 49,18,60,931 (51.64 per cent) and the number of female voters is 46,05,74,630 (48.35 per cent).

He said that as per the estimated population, 2022 (based on the data received from the states), the percentage of male and female population is 51 and 49 respectively. “This indicates that the enrollment of women voters in the electoral rolls is on the lines of the census sex ratio. The sex ratio is maintained in the electoral roll and is in equal proportion to their share in the total population. There is no question of low enrollment of women in the electoral rolls and hence no remedial steps need to be taken.”
