Equip ambulances with GPS, set up traffic control rooms: Karnataka HC

The Karnataka High Court has directed the authorities to install GPS tracking system on ambulances in the state so that they can travel seamlessly in traffic.

A division bench of the High Court headed by Chief Justice Prasanna B Varale gave this direction after hearing a petition by the Bharat Punarratna Trust. Thereafter, the High Court adjourned the hearing for three weeks. All ambulances in Karnataka have to be enabled GPS The court has said that tracking systems and their regular monitoring should also be done.

The government was directed to issue necessary circulars in this regard to ambulance owners and manufacturers so that both government and private ambulances would be enabled with Global Positioning System (GPS).

The court also directed to set up a control room for the management of ambulances. The control room should be able to control the traffic on the roads while the ambulances are traveling. The court said that the tender process for this should be started at the earliest.

The court also directed for a report on the implementation of an earlier circular by the Commissioner of Police regarding smooth movement of ambulances during the movement of VIPs.
