DUBAI: Many cricketers and captains have learned the tricks of the trade from the iconic Mahendra Singh Dhoni And Namibia Skipper Gerhard Erasmus is no different as he praises the former India wicketkeeper-batsman for his “calm” approach.
Another leader Erasmus drew inspiration from was a former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum, who is currently the head coach of Kolkata Knight Riders in the ongoing Indian Premier League.
Erasmus said in a virtual media briefing, “For me as captain, maybe my captaincy style is what I learn by watching people act like Brendon McCullum or MS Dhoni, in the sense that they are good thinkers of the game, but He has a different style.” The conversation, facilitated by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
“I learned a lot watching McCullum, the ease that he has under his captaincy. On the other side of the spectrum, you learn a lot from MS Dhoni, Dhoni’s calm and emotional face, so of course we have learned a lot from the highest quality players,” said the 26-year-old.
The other batsman, whom he saw while growing up, was dodging South Africa’s AB de Villiers, who is still facing opposition attacks against sweepers.
“The kind of energy he (de Villiers) brought to the crease, the kind of shots he brought, the way he played around the field, he is definitely someone I looked up to when I was young and do to continue.” Erasmus, who was introduced to cricket by his father.
Namibia will open its t20 world cup Campaign against Sri Lanka at Zayed Cricket Stadium in Abu Dhabi on 18 October. They will take on Ireland at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium on 22 October.
Admitting that the wicket in Sharjah is playing out at a slow pace, the right-handed batsman and off-break bowler said it could be in his side’s favour.
“We are following the circumstances (in the UAE) closely and doing our own kind of analysis behind the scenes. Sharjah’s wicket has shown a little slow play.
“We have a lot of different skills in the team, we have other spinners, we have different bowlers who change the pace. I think the wicket in Sharjah can play in our favor,” he said.
Erasmus said his teammates are also keen to learn from the former South African player David Wiese, which will leave for Namibia.
“Yes, David (Wise) has a lot of experience and has played a lot of T20 cricket, he has also played T20 tournaments all over the world.
“David is also a new face in our team, it’s amazing, he’s someone we can learn from,” the Namibian captain signed off.
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup will be played in Oman and the United Arab Emirates from October 17.
