Euro 2024 opener to be held in Munich, final in Berlin

The final of the 2024 European Championship will be held at the Olympiastadion in Berlin and the opening match will take place at the stadium in Bayern Munich. UEFA’s executive committee made the decision on Tuesday, 10 May.

Matches in the tournament will be played in Germany in three groups, with only two divided between groups.

A northern cluster consists of Hamburg, Berlin and Leipzig. To the west are Düsseldorf, Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen, Frankfurt and Cologne. In the south there will be matches in Frankfurt, Munich and Stuttgart.

The 24-team cash-rich football tournament is scheduled to begin on June 14 and the final will be held on July 14.

Back in 2006, Germany hosted the World Cup, the final of which was held at the refurbished Olympiastadion. The stadium was originally built for the 1936 Olympic Games organized by Nazi Germany.

West Germany also got the chance to host the World Cup and European Championship in 1974 and 1988 respectively.

Back in October 2021, Germany unveiled the logo for the tournament during a ceremony with a light show at the stadium that will host the final.

Fans were not allowed in the evening as only a select number of guests and media persons were present at the venue.

Logos of all 10 cities – Berlin, Cologne, Dortmund, Düsseldorf, Frankfurt, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Leipzig, Munich and Stuttgart – were also presented. 10 of the logos are famous local landmarks. For example, the Brandenburg Gate was featured on the logo of Berlin.

UEFA President Alexander Ceferin said: “From now on, the tournament has a brand identity that reflects our ambition with the host association and the host cities.”

The slogan of the championship is “United by Football. Vereint im Herzen Europas” – or “United at the Heart of Europe” – is meant to convey a message of inclusion and solidarity.
