Europe reports first known case of new covid variant found in southern Africa

Belgium said on Friday it had detected the first announced case of a new COVID-19 variant in Europe in an unvaccinated person returning from abroad.

“We have one case that now confirms this type,” B.1.1.1.529, first detected in southern Africa, Health Minister Frank Vandenbrücke told a media conference.
