Everything you wanted to know about EV charging stations

Electric vehicles are becoming extremely popular around the world. The need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels and clean the environment has fueled demand.

Electric vehicles are extremely common around the world. People are moving from conventional cars with petrol/diesel engines to electric vehicles. They are more efficient and more environmentally friendly than other vehicles. Electric vehicle charging stations are important for the charging of electric vehicles. Without proper charging, the vehicle will not be able to move forward. Before visiting one’s station it would be beneficial to do proper research about it.

What is an EV Charging Station?

An EV charging station is also known as an Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment (EVSE) or EV charger. This is the device that charges when plugged into an electric vehicle, just like any other electrical device.

EV stations are becoming increasingly common in the world. There were already 20,178 charging stations installed in the US in 2017 and the number has grown since then. Infrastructure is also developing rapidly in India.

Power Generation

Solar panels are the major source of electricity for EV charging stations. But many EVs use other renewable sources of energy to provide electricity. This includes hydropower as well as wind power. Equipment is connected to a station as a grid, and power is distributed to all ports.

Types of Charging Stations

There are mainly three types of charging stations in use around the world:-

  • Level 1 EV Charging Station: 120V AC plugs are used in Level 1 EV charging stations. However, it takes a lot of effort to charge the car. Generally, people use this type as it is most economical and suitable for short term charging purposes.
  • Level 2 EV Charging Station: The personal charging station uses 240 V, and the commercial charging station uses 208 V. These stations are extremely efficient and quick. The entire charging process takes only 2 hours. Professional corporations prefer Level 2 stations.
  • Level 3 EV Charging Station: DC charging station is known as fast charging station. A 60–100 mile (96–160 km) reach is provided by DC charging stations, which only takes 20 minutes! It is specifically used only for select vehicles as EVs do not have DC charging capability.

  • Type 1 Charger Plug: This is a single phase charger. It can charge up to 7.4 kW but this is very rare in charging stations.
  • Type 2 Charger Plug: This is a three phase charger. The load rating for this type of plug can go up to 43 kW.
  • Combination Plug: This is an updated model of the Type 2 charger plug. It supports both AC and DC currents.
  • Chademo Plug: Developed in Japan, it is a fast-charging plug. The load rating is 50kW.
  • Tesla Supercharger Plug: This is a modified version of the Type 2 charger plug.
