Excise duty on fuel doubled in FY2011

The central government’s excise duty levied on petrol and diesel more than doubled to ₹3.72 lakh crore in the pandemic year 2020-21, of which states were given less than ₹20,000 crore, according to a government reply. Rajya Sabha on Tuesday

Minister of State for Finance Pankaj Choudhary said in a written reply to a question that the collection of Central Excise Duty on Petrol and Diesel increased from ₹1.78 lakh crore in 2019-20 to ₹3.72 lakh crore in 2020-21.

The increase in collection was mainly due to increase in incidents of taxation on fuel.

In 2019, the excise duty on petrol was ₹19.98 per liter and ₹15.83 on diesel. The government had twice last year reduced the excise duty on petrol to Rs 32.98 per liter and on diesel to Rs 31.83. In this year’s budget, the duty was reduced to Rs 32.90 on petrol and Rs 31.80 on diesel. Recently there was a cut of ₹5 on petrol and ₹10 per liter on diesel.
