Excited for Doon? Here are 5 other Denis Villeneuve movies you should be watching

French-Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve’s unique vision and direction often doesn’t lead to stunning creations. Her upcoming project Dune, starring a bunch of Hollywood A-listers including Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet, has garnered a lot of buzz since the announcement. A Venice Film Festival favorite (it received one of the longest standing ovations), Dune is potentially one of the biggest films of the year. This is the code for the Oscars as we know it. The film is releasing worldwide on 22 October.

Villeneuve is no stranger to this kind of praise. In fact, the actor’s filmography includes several critically and commercially acclaimed films. Ahead of the release of Doon, here are some other amazing films from the director to watch:

Arrival (2016)

Touted by many as Villeneuve’s best, Arrival follows the life of a language expert, played by Amy Adams, who has to communicate with aliens who appear on Earth in twelve mysterious spaceships. Arrival is a movie that grabs your hundred percent attention, tests you, but is worth it in the end. The most striking feature of the film is that, under all the science-fiction glitter, is a human story about hope and unity.

Sicario (2015)

Villeneuve’s 2015 venture Sicario is a surprisingly underrated work in his filmography. However, it is considered one of his best films till date. The film chronicles FBI agent Kate Macker, whose mission is to stop a drug cartel in the United States and Mexico. Sicario isn’t one of Mills’ action-thrillers about mass violence. It’s a complex film that isn’t afraid to cross the line between black and white. Emily Blunt, who plays Macker, has given the best performance of her career in the film.

Prisoner (2013)

This gritty crime-thriller sees Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal at their best. Jackman especially haunts you as Keller Dover, a desperate father who seeks out his missing daughter and her friend. The prisoners don’t shy away from uncovering the worst humanity has ever had. Good and bad, moral and immoral overlap. Prisoner is a deeply disturbing, yet important film.

Enemy (2013)

Touted to be a neo-noir Hitchcockian thriller, Dushman follows a history professor who sees his doppelganger in a film, finds him and begins living his life in secret. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal in his second collaboration with Villeneuve after Prisoners. The actor gives a captivating performance that keeps the attention of the audience till the last epic frame.

blade runner 2049

A reboot of Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, Villeneuve’s version features Ryan Gosling as a new version of the eponymous character. This Blade Runner is tasked with an important mission in a futuristic, more dystopian world. The whole movie looks like it came out of a painting. It is condescending, but not necessarily in the bad sense of work. The film takes time to captivate the audience and make them feel extremely satisfied.
