new Delhi: At the 94th Academy Awards, actor Will Smith slammed event host Chris Rock for making fun of his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head. Jada suffers from an auto-immune disease called ‘Alopecia Areata’, which causes hair loss. After controversy, people are debating whether it is okay to make fun of someone’s medical condition or whether it is okay to react and resort to violence to explain things. While we are of the opinion that both making fun of one’s illness and resorting to violence are not okay, but ‘Alopecia Areata’ should be an important measure to raise awareness and sensitivity about the disease.
What is Alopecia Areata?
Alopecia areata is an auto-immune condition in which a person experiences sudden hair loss that begins with one or more circular bald patches that may overlap. In this disease, the person’s body starts attacking his own hair follicles (where hair grows), due to which hair can fall anywhere on the body. Kanu Verma, Dermatologist. Aakash Healthcare Super Specialty Hospital revealed that it is a “non-contagious, non-communicable condition, which means it does not spread through touching or living together”.
Who can get Alopecia Areata?
Alopecia areata can affect anyone. Men and women get it equally and it affects all racial and ethnic groups. Dr. Verma says, “Onset can happen at any age; However, most people develop it during childhood or their teens. About half of them regrow their hair even without treatment. When hair regrows, they may never fall out again. Although it is possible to have unpredictable cycles of hair loss and re-growth over the years”.
Symptoms of Alopecia Areata
The most prominent symptom of alopecia is hair loss. Coin-sized spots of hair loss appear. Itching or burning may occur in the area prior to hair loss.
“The hair follicles are not destroyed and hair can regrow if the inflammation of the hair follicle subsides. Sometimes the nails and toes can also be affected, and sometimes these changes are at first sight. There are,” says Dr. Verma.
Types of Alopecia Areata
Hair loss can be classified into three categories:
patchy: In this condition, the hair fall occurs in patches instead of completely falling out.
Totals: almost complete hair loss
Universalis: This is a very rare type in which all the hair on the scalp, face and the rest of the body is lost.

What is the medical treatment for alopecia areata?
“Currently there is no cure for alopecia areata because it is an autoimmune condition. However, there are some other options for hair regrowth. Corticosteroids and anti-inflammatory drugs that suppress the immune system of the affected individual are the most effective agents for the disease. The more recommended treatments are. They can be given as local injections, topical creams, or orally. Other medications are helpful in the form of hair vitamin tablets and some hair serums. More recently, the role of PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) has been demonstrated. It has been documented. Despite the fact that some medications help regrow hair, one will continue to have random patches of hair loss,” explains Dr. Verma.
How can we remove the stigma in women related to hair loss due to diseases?

Dr Godse shares some ways to reduce the stigma related to ‘alopecia areata’:

• See a mental health specialist if stress and stigma make it difficult for you to adapt to the situation. This is extremely important because hair loss can dramatically affect a person’s self-confidence, and it is essential to deal with this aspect of the situation.
• Make sure to make a good diet and lifestyle choice so that hair growth lasts as long as possible
• Invest in hair care products – There are many hair loss products today, ranging from hiding the symptoms to alleviating the root cause. These can be effective measures to prevent hair fall and ensure long-term hair growth.
