Rich Communication Services started its journey in 2007 and was later acquired by GSMA Association in 2008. The GSMA, representing the interests of mobile operators around the world, decided on a “universal profile” that each service provider, product manufacturer and software developer can use to drive the adoption of RCS across devices.
RCS messaging is not much different from WhatsApp and Telegram where the entire platform is managed through the Internet. This protocol has features such as multi-media support and live chat between service providers and devices, as it was designed to replace the more familiar SMS and MMS messaging. RCS can compete with the iMessage platform, however, there are some minor differences between them.
Reasons for Google asking Apple to adopt RCS
According to new video released by Google via Twitter, the lyrics of the new Drake song refer to mobile number-based text messages that are being rejected by iMessage. The Apple app is showing these messages as green SMS bubbles, hence the “Tex Go Green” connection. Google’s marketing team has used the song to promote “the more common green versus blue bubble phenomenon,” which occurs when Android and iOS users connect via their phone numbers, reports 9to5Google. In addition, Google has publicly requested Apple to adopt RCS at its I/O 2022 event.
Importance of RCS Messaging
The RCS messaging platform relies on the Internet to send and receive text, audio and video messages with support for video calls. Furthermore, it also includes features such as high-resolution media support, typing prompts, read receipts, and most importantly, end-to-end encryption.
How secure is RCS messaging
The platform is encrypted “client-to-server” designed to block spam messages from reaching users. According to a report by Pocketlint, companies that try to send messages using RCS need to pass a brand verification process for users to find the brand name in the sender’s information. The report also states that a lock icon next to the send button verifies whether the message is encrypted or not.
