Explainer: Which international students can apply for an off-campus work permit in Canada

Canada on Friday allowed international students who have off-campus work authorization on their study permits to work twenty hours per week while classes are in session. Immigration Minister Sean Fraser made the announcement earlier this month, saying the measure was taken temporarily and was in effect from November 15 to December 31.

Canada has extended this temporary measure to foreign nationals who have recently submitted study permit applications on Friday. International students will also be able to benefit from this policy if Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada approves their application.

Eligibility for off-campus work permits for international students:

As reported by CIC News, it is necessary for international students to have a valid study permit.

They should be studying full time in a Designated Educational Institution (DLI).

Students must be part of an academic, vocational or vocational training program that is of 6 months duration.

In addition, they must also be in satisfactory academic condition.

The student must also have a Social Insurance Number (SIN)

According to the report, if a student’s status changes while he is working and he no longer meets any of the eligibility criteria, he should stop working off-campus.

The report also states that if a student is no longer studying full-time at an institution, they can continue to work off-campus, subject to certain conditions.

List of students who are not eligible for off campus work:

According to the CWS report, students who are enrolled in English or French as a second language (ESL or FSL) are not eligible for an off-campus work permit.

In addition, students who are pursuing general interest courses or programs are also ineligible.

Visiting or exchange of students in a Designated Educational Institution (DLI), it said.

The report further states that students who are taking authorized leave from their studies, changing schools and are not currently studying are not all eligible for off-campus work permits.

Canada is currently dealing with labor shortages and unemployment rates that are below historical standards.

Statistics Canada reported that the country’s unemployment rate fell to 5.2 percent in September, from 5.4 percent in August.

Currently, the rule is that international students applying to study in a Canadian educational program may be authorized to work off-campus during their studies for up to 20 hours per week.

However, this limit is removed during scheduled holidays such as summer and winter holidays, allowing international students to support themselves financially.

With nearly one million job vacancies, this has resulted in the Government of Canada easing this rule for some time.

According to research by the Canadian Bureau for International Education, most international students are interested in living in Canada as permanent residents after completing their studies.

Canada is one of the leading destinations for international students. In 2021 alone, it hosted over 620,000 international students.

Canada has already processed more than 452,000 study permit applications between January and August of 2022, a 23 percent increase compared to 367,000 processed in the same period in 2021.
