Eye Strain Headache: Symptoms, Causes and Treatment

Uncomfortable eye strain can be brought on by many different activities. Spending too much time in front of a screen, reading or driving can cause eye strain.

Although there is a direct link between headaches and eye problems, it can be challenging to identify the exact cause of some types of headaches. Most types of headache, such as migraine, tension headache and cluster headache, cause symptoms of vision problems. The same goes for some types of headaches, which have been linked to eye strain as a cause.

Eye strain headache symptoms

You may have an eye strain if you feel any of the following:

– tired eyes

– watery eyes

– blurred vision

– sore eyes

– itchy eyes

– tear

– dry eye

– double vision

– sensitivity to light

-Shoulder and neck pain

– stabbing pain in the head

Headache due to eye strain

Eye problems and headaches often go hand in hand. Many eye problems can be both a cause and a consequence of a headache. People who spend a lot of time in front of screens at work are at risk of developing computer vision syndrome and experiencing eye strain headaches.

Similarly, eye strain can be caused by reading, driving for a long time, exposure to hot or cold air, and more. In short, eye strain can develop over time as a result of any activity that demands intense, up-close work.

Most of these triggers have been found to cause eye strain headaches, however, the exact causes of most of these different headaches are unclear. Some can be seen as the following:

Migraines: Often accompanied by visual abnormalities, migraines can result in excruciating pain behind the eyes and extreme light sensitivity. Prolonged exposure to bright light that strains the eyes can bring them on, among other things.

cluster: This type of headache is intense and recurrent. Cluster headaches cause severe burning and piercing pain behind or around the eyes. This can result in sensitive eyes, swollen eyelids and watery eyes.

stress: One of the most frequent types of headaches, tension headaches can result in sensitivity to light and a pressure-like sensation behind the eyes. Tension headaches can be made worse by eye strain.

treatment options

Home treatment options for a common eye tension headache include:

– Resting in a dark and quiet place

– Use an ice pack or cold towel on your forehead

– use of hot compress

– get more and better sleep
