A report by Car Magazine UK has fueled rumors of Volkswagen Group re-acquiring McLaren. Reportedly, Audi which is a subsidiary of Volkswagen Group will buy McLaren, whose automotive arm is struggling due to the pandemic and lost its longtime CEO Mike Flewitt a few months back. Audi will also work with McLaren’s motorsports unit and supply it with F1 engines that will enable the Volkswagen Group to make its long-awaited entry into F1 as a manufacturer.

Audi’s affiliate brand Porsche is seeking a team-up with Red Bull and its newly formed powertrain engine division, which acquired Honda’s engine IP after the Japanese manufacturer pulled out of the game late last year. Honda still has an exclusivity period and is also helping Red Bull with the transition to the new E10 biofuel that will be used in F1 cars next year.

Porsche is also looking to enter F1 as an engine manufacturer and will likely acquire or co-own Red Bull’s powertrain division when it enters the sport. 2026 is the likely timeline for the two brands to enter F1 as there will be a new engine formula designed by the FIA in collaboration with the Volkswagen Group. These new engines will produce more power, and the internal combustion elements will be powered entirely by sustainable biofuels. It will be powered by a 1.6 V6 engine that will be supported by a 475 bhp electrical hybrid system which is twice as powerful as the existing hybrid system.

As far as McLaren being acquired by Audi is concerned, there are reports that Mumtalaqat Holding Company, which has a major stake in the Woking-based supercar maker, is set to sell. If the deal with McLaren fails, Audi has a backup plan to team up or acquire Williams F1, which already has a group of former Volkswagen personnel such as its CEO Jost Capito, and Porsche Red. Would like to team up with Bull’s Bee. -Teams can look at AlphaTauri and even Haas which is currently backed by Ferrari.

In this way, Volkswagen Group will be able to introduce its engine technology to F1 without incurring the development cost of the chassis department, and these brands will gain marketing power thanks to F1’s reach and scale. The partnership with Red Bull would also cut the cost of engine development, which Honda suffered some losses, eventually pulling out despite Verstappen winning the world title in 2021.

On top of this, if McLaren were to be acquired by Audi, the group would become the most powerful hypercar entity in the world, with Audi, Porsche, McLaren, Bugatti, Rimac and Lamborghini all under one group. While that is happening, McLaren Racing Division CEO Zack Brown has reiterated that the British carmaker’s financial health is in great shape thanks to some new investments and the sale of its technology centre.

0 notes

Audi and Porsche simply can’t make F1 technology from the start and due to the complexity of German labor laws, the Volkswagen Group needs to focus on acquisitions that create an entity from within.
