Qualifying for the 2022 Monaco GP ended early as Sergio Perez made a mistake driving his Red Bull car into the barriers. Right after the incident, the session was red flagged, leaving them for more on their final qualifying laps, as the session was not resumed with only 30 seconds on the clock. This handed Charles Leclerc the pole position for his home race in Monaco, as he was already in provisional pole. Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz Jr achieved the first line start of his F1 career, as his first Q3 lap was enough to secure P2. However, he could not avoid colliding with Sergio Perez’s crashed car despite the yellow flags. If he receives another reprimand for this incident, he will be given a 10 place grid penalty as he has already received 3 reprimands this season.

Despite being out of Q3, Sergio Pérez qualified in third place ahead of teammate Max Verstappen, who currently leads the world championship by 6 points. Verstappen also won the 2021 Monaco GP and has won every race he has completed this year, giving him a good chance of a great result tomorrow. Lando Norris finished an impressive 5th on the grid ahead of fellow Englishman George Russell, who could only manage to keep his advanced Mercedes in P6. Fernando Alonso also impressed in P7 after a miserable qualifying for his home race last weekend, and will be looking to capitalize on this Top 10 start given his recent luck, or lack thereof.

Championship leader Verstappen will start tomorrow’s race in P4.

Despite the upgrades brought in last weekend, Hamilton’s struggle with his Mercedes W13 continued, and he could only find the pace to finish P8 in qualifying. Sebastian Vettel put him in Q3 on a great lap in Q2 and finished 9th, surpassing Esteban Ocon’s alpinum to make 2 alpines in the top 10.

Late in Q1 also saw a red flag as Yuki Tsunoda cut a barrier and instead of a yellow flag, a red flag was shown due to a martial error. It ousted the likes of Galley and Zhou in Q1, while Tsunoda made it into Q2 and missed out on Q3.

0 notes

Tomorrow will be an interesting race as both the heroes of the championship find themselves quite different on the grid. Leclerc will be looking to capitalize on his pole position to break a streak of bad luck at Monaco, as he has yet to finish a Grand Prix in the Principality. Monegasque also find themselves out of the championship lead for the first time this season, and a win could put them back on top. Max Verstappen, although fourth on the grid, is a car that manages the tires better in the race. Tomorrow’s strategy will be crucial in deciding the outcome of the race, as it is likely to rain on the track at the time of the Grand Prix.
