Kyalami will likely be the track that will host the South African GP

F1 used to race at the Kyalami race track in South Africa. The last time F1 was in Africa was in 1993 but in recent weeks and months, Liberty Media has prioritized returning to Africa. It wanted a mix of classic races, something that has happened with the return to Zandvoort and Imola, but also new venues such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia and now Miami in 2022. Las Vegas is also being added in 2023. With all these races confirmed, the focus is now on the return of Africa and Kyalami in pole position but this will not happen immediately. Kyalami needs to be upgraded as an FIA Grade 1 status track and is not obliged to be before 2024.

Kyalami has hosted international motorsports for the remainder of the 1990s and 2000s, and the circuit has declined in quality in recent years. But then Porsche South Africa CEO Toby Venter bought the track in 2014 and has since been redesigned to include an extended start-finish straight but this redevelopment has only given it FIA Grade 2 status. It requires additional run-off areas and TEC Pro handicaps for Grade 1 status.

The last time an F1 race in Africa was held in Kyalami was in 1993.

“On top of the Americas, on top of China, I think there’s likely to be Africa soon as well. There’s a lot of interest. Certainly that’s another area that’s been missing in the geography of our calendar so far.” F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said in March.

It also helps that 7-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, the only black driver in the sport’s history, is lobbying to return to Africa. Complicating matters for Liberty Media is its return to China for 2023 with a proposed race in Shanghai, but the renewal of the hard lockdown in Shanghai for another version of the coronavirus is the issue. This could open a window for Kylami.
