Fact-Check: The truth behind viral photo of astronaut floating above Earth

A photo of astronaut Bruce McCandless II is going viral online.

Space travel images and video clips of astronauts never cease to amaze us. This highly efficient task is typically performed when the astronauts are securely tied up in the spacecraft. So imagine the surprise when we saw a picture of an astronaut floating above the Earth. Yes, you read that right. Recently, the image of an immoral astronaut roaming in space started doing the rounds on social media. While many had their jaws dropped in the spectacle, others were skeptical about the authenticity of the image.

A Twitter user who posted the picture wrote: “Crazy photo of astronaut Bruce McCandless II, the first man to conduct an untethered free flight in space”.

The tweet garnered several negative reactions from users, with one of them terming it as “nonsense”.

Another user said that the little astronaut figure seen in the photo was just a clipart.

Another user sarcastically wrote, “Welcome to the wonderful world of image compression and JPG artifacts”.

One user wrote, “They did this in 1984. Really, just google their name. This photo though is photoshopped, but only to show the mountains as they do.”

The image was uploaded on November 4 by a. shared as facebook post, The post read, “This is a real image of an astronaut who flew 320 feet from the orbiter, 170 miles above Earth. Arguably one of the best astronaut related photos ever taken! “

Believe it or not, unethical spacewalks are a fact. a report by USA Today confirmed that parts of the viral photo were taken from a 1984 photograph of astronaut Bruce McCandless II during his first untethered spacewalk. That year, Mr McCandless and fellow astronaut Robert Lee Stewart piloted a jet propulsion backpack, called the Manned Maneuvering Unit.

While the untethered spacewalk did take place, the picture shared on Twitter has certainly been digitally altered. According to USA Today, original NASA image The mountain ranges not visible in the viral photo. Instead, the image of Earth was derived from a photograph of a mountain range, taken during a flight from Toronto to Beijing, China.
