Officials said a man illegally entered the West Bengal Assembly on February 15 after allegedly identifying himself as an MLA.

The man, identified as Gajanan Verma, a resident of Howrah district, was arrested by the police, he said.

The incident took place when the state budget was being presented in the assembly, he said.

Officials said the man identified himself as an MLA at the gate and entered the lobby of the House.

“Security personnel inquired about his identity when they found him roaming in the lobby, asking people how to come inside the House to watch the budget session. First he called himself an MLA, but could not show the identity card. We informed the marshal who called the police, said an officer.

The man then claimed that he had been sent by Governor CV Anand Bose. He said he was apprehended by officers from the Hare Street Police Station.

“We found that he was having some trouble after losing his son and wife a few years back. He lives with his grandson,” said the officer.

Police said they are probing the security lapse that allowed the man to enter the assembly premises.

“We are trying to ascertain whether he had some other motive,” he said.
