Fans left as January window draws Erling Haaland’s ‘weird’ Lap of Honor brews transfer doubts

Erling Haaland was seen waving at the four corners of Signal Iduna Park after Borussia Dortmund’s 3-0 win over Grüther Firth on Wednesday. The Norwegian superstar has had a great time at Dortmund, however, in the process his goodbye wave before the January window fueled transfer rumours. Reports suggest that several of Europe’s elite, including Premier League giants Manchester United and record European Champions Real Madrid, have expressed interest in the 21-year-old.

However, the Bundesliga club’s sporting director, Michael Zorc, underestimated Haaland’s wave phenomenon and assured fans that the Norwegian would remain in the January transfer window, Goal.com reported.

Speaking after Dortmund’s 3–2 defeat at Hertha on Saturday, Zork told Sky Germany: “I also looked at the pictures afterwards, it looked a bit strange, but I don’t think it was a deliberate action.” I spoke to him again briefly and asked what was behind the gesture and he did not reply anything,” he said.

Haaland is currently under contract at the club until 2024 and has a €75 million (GBP 64m or $84m) release clause set to be active next summer. Manchester City, Chelsea, Bayern Munich, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked with the 21-year-old but Zorc says Dortmund will not be pressured to sell.

“Of course, we would like him to stay at Dortmund for the summer. We don’t have to leave him, not even for financial reasons,” he told the publication. “We have a long-term contract with him, so he has to act first and not us. Everything will be fine for Dortmund if it stays like this,” he said.

Meanwhile, Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke confirmed in an interview with Bild that Real Madrid are among the teams chasing Haaland. The club’s chief believes La Liga will be Haaland’s next destination, but has not given up completely on retaining the forward as talks with his agent Mino Relloa are ongoing.

“It doesn’t matter where you go, everyone talks about Erling Haaland,” Watzke said.

“I only know as a guarantee that Real Madrid are very interested in him. I can name 25 other teams right now, but I know for sure.”

Haaland has had a successful career so far, scoring 145 goals in 185 appearances for the country and club, also having high success with Dortmund, scoring 76 runs in 74 games so far. He currently has only one title with DFB-Pokal Dortmund last season. But if the club wins another important title like the Bundesliga or the UEFA Champions League (UCL), things could change drastically.
