Faridabad: 4 more reservoirs soon in Faridabad | Gurgaon News – Times of India

Gurgaon: To deal with the groundwater crisis FaridabadThe Haryana Forest Department has planned to dig four reservoirs by next month. Officials said each pond would be spread over one acre of land.
According to the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB), Faridabad comes under the ‘over-exploited’ district in the region as it extracted 125% of groundwater last year. Over the years, many lakes have dried up due to mining and over-exploitation of groundwater. Reservoir in Pali, Dhauj and Mohbtabad areas Aravali Made this year in Faridabad. “We are going to develop four more reservoirs in Faridabad next month,” said district forest officer Raj Kumar.
He said that these ponds would increase the water holding capacity and recharge the ground water. These will be developed in areas where water usually gets accumulated from the higher reaches of the Aravalli.
Annual groundwater withdrawal in Haryana accounts for 137% of its annual extractable groundwater resources, which is the third highest in the country.
In addition to recharging the groundwater level, the Aravallis are considered to be an important protective barrier between hard Thar Desert and the populated Gangetic plains, which provide important hydrological services and climate change, especially because of their forest cover. “The construction of reservoirs in the Aravallis will also improve the forest cover and slow down the process of soil erosion,” he said.
Meanwhile, environmentalists say that these reservoirs will also help the Aravalli animals. “This is an important step to augment the water bodies in the region. Also, there is a need to preserve the existing water bodies in the Aravallis as the region is a wildlife corridor. The move will reduce the human-animal conflict that occurs in the region as animals enter human territory in search of water in summer. Vaishali Rana ChandraAn environmental activist.
