Bayern Munich record-setting striker Robert Lewandowski on Monday retained the FIFA’s best men’s player title in the best of 2021 ceremony as Barcelona captain Alexia Putellas received the best women’s player award. The 33-year-old Lewandowski, who set a Bundesliga goalscoring record last season, beat Argentina’s Lionel Messi of Paris Saint-Germain and Egypt’s Mohamed Salah of Liverpool to win the trophy for the second time. It was some consolation for the Polish striker who lost to Messi at the Ballon d’Or in November.

For Putelas, it doubled a prize, as the Spaniard won over Barcelona teammate Jennifer Hermoso and Chelsea’s Australian striker Sam Kerr, just as he did for the Ballon d’Or.

The 27-year-old midfielder enjoyed an exceptional 2020-2021 season with Barcelona as he led the Catalans to the Spanish league and cup double as well as the Champions League.

Edouard Mendy of Chelsea and Christian Endler of Lyon won the goalkeeping awards.

Chelsea received both coaching awards through Thomas Tuchel and Emma Hayes.

Danish medical staff and players, who had to deal with Christian Eriksson’s collapse on the field at Euro, won the “fair-play” award.
