Manchester City attacker Kevin De Bruyne said on Friday that the proposal to hold the World Cup every two years was “not a bad idea”. FIFA’s biennial World Cup plan was laid out earlier this year by former Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger, who now works as head of global football development for the governing body. The proposal has been widely criticized by the likes of UEFA and the Premier League. FIFA plans to publish a report in November ahead of the “global summit” by the end of the year. “At the beginning of the season, I had a meeting with FIFA and Arsene Wenger to explain to us what they wanted to do,” de Bruyne told Belga news agency.

“To do something like this, the federations of all the countries, UEFA and FIFA have to coordinate. Everyone has to work together.

“I emphasized a second point: I told him that at the end of the season he has to have a real period of rest for us, for the players.

“The idea itself isn’t bad, as long as everyone works together,” he said.

De Bruyne, 30, is set to play Belgium as hosts Estonia on Saturday and then travel to Wales on Monday in a qualifier for next year’s World Cup.

Two points from the last pair of games in the campaign will see the Red Devils claim a place in the final in Qatar.
