A fire broke out at a furniture shop on busy Ranganathan Street in T Nagar here on Wednesday morning. Despite thousands of people thronging for Diwali shopping, the fire and rescue service personnel averted a major disaster.
The fire broke out at 11.30 am in a false ceiling on the first floor of a building on Ranganathan Street. Thick smoke was coming out of the building. The Fire and Rescue Services department was immediately alerted.
South District Fire Officer S Syed Mohammad Shah said, “On receipt of the call, people who went on awareness campaign in and around Ranganathan Street, Panagal Park, Pondi Bazar were pressed into service. First of all the shop workers were evacuated safely. Then the fire was brought under control by disconnecting the power supply.
