First Round of T20 World Cup | Bangladesh alive with 26-run win over Oman

Oman will face Scotland, while Bangladesh will next face Papua New Guinea.

Bangladesh kept their hopes of progressing to the Super 12 stage alive by defeating co-hosts Oman by 26 runs in a Group B match of the T20 World Cup being played in Al Amarat on Tuesday.

Opener Mohammad Naeem played a brilliant half-century to help Bangladesh set a target of 154 runs.

Both Oman and Bangladesh now have one win each, and will be vying for the only remaining spot to qualify for the Super 12 stage. Scotland, who beat Papua New Guinea on day one, have already qualified from the group.

Oman will face Scotland, while Bangladesh will next face Papua New Guinea.

Chasing a challenging target, Ludhiana-born Jatinder Singh (40 off 33) got Oman off to a strong start with Kashyap Prajapati (21) but the other batsmen struggled.

Like Oman, Bangladesh too was guilty of dropping the catch. But under tremendous pressure, he held his nerves and managed to make a strong comeback thanks to some clever captaincy from skipper Mahmudullah and spinners Shakib Al Hasan and Mahedi Hasan.

Left-arm fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman took four wickets.

Oman needed 54 runs in the last five overs. But with the boundaries drying up and the required run rate rising steadily, the Oman batsmen got desperate and went for the big shots, losing their wickets in the process.

Shakib, who acted with the bat, also finished with impressive figures of 3/28 with the ball, while Mahedi Hasan (1/14) and Mohammad Saifuddin (1/16) took a wicket each.

Bangladesh, who had opted to bat with a win in the match, having lost their first match of the tournament to Scotland, were struggling at 29 for the loss of two wickets in the powerplay.

With his back against the wall, Naeem, who hit 64 off 51 deliveries, and star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan (42 off 29) put on an 81-run partnership to give their side much-needed momentum.

The dropped catches and poor fielding added to the confidence of both the batsmen.

Fayaz Butt, who played Under-19 cricket for Pakistan, took a brilliant catch of his bowling to dismiss Mahedi Hasan for a duck, while Oman were guilty of dropping three catches.

Naeem, playing his first game of the tournament, hit four maximums and three fours, while Shakib’s innings hit six fours.

However, a brilliant piece of fielding that saw Aaqib Ilyas affect Shakib’s run out saw the return of the spring in Oman’s move.

The co-hosts took six wickets for 41 runs in the last five overs.

Fayaz Butt (3/30), Kalimullah (2/30) and Bilal Khan (3/18) took eight wickets, while left-arm spinner Zeeshan Maqsood (1/17) took one.
