Heinrich Fisker’s Fisker Automotive will manufacture electric cars in India in partnership with its manufacturing partner Foxconn. Foxconn, which already has a large presence in India as it is a contract manufacturer for Xiaomi and Apple, recently made a major foray into the electric vehicle sector, which will be key to Fisker’s plan. Fisker has already partnered with Foxconn and Magna to manufacture its electric cars in the US and its founder believes this will help his company launch electric vehicles worth Rs 22 lakh in India before Tesla Which will have unique technologies.
Fisker which is launching its first EV – the Fisker Ocean SUV in the US this year, will also initially come to India as a fully imported fully built unit. Then over the next two years, it will launch its global model called the Peer, which will be manufactured in India with the help of Foxconn. Apart from India, Foxconn will also manufacture the car in the US, Europe and China.
Chairman and CEO Henrik Fisker told ET, “Software development is a huge force in India. “Why India and China? Because this vehicle will start at $30,000 (about Rs 22 lakh). Hence, it will be much cheaper than what is available now, yet huge with new types of storage space and technology that are not seen It’s a segment. And we can really only accomplish that if we eventually build a million vehicles a year,” Fisker said.

It should be noted, Henrik Fisker is the former Aston Martin and BMW executive who helped develop iconic vehicles like the DB9 and Z8, both of which have appeared in James Bond films. His wife, Geeta Fisker, who is part of the company, is also from India who could have played a role in the decision.
“When you look at the Indian population, the Indian market, they are extremely tech-savvy. I think India is at one point, and I think no one really knows when, but at one point it exploded. What is going to happen when it comes. Adoption of electrification. Of course, the government has a big role to play in this. But I think at one point of time there will be pressure from the general population to go to electricity. I think we will reach India with production Fisker peers with Foxconn before Tesla begins production of its vehicles in India.”

This news has come at a time when the chances of Tesla coming fast in the Indian market are slim. Last month, Tesla’s Elon Musk tweeted that he needed to address the challenges with the Indian government. Earlier, the world’s richest men used to criticize the import tax on electric vehicles.
Tesla wants to launch in India, but it wants tax exemption on its imports. While the government is open to the idea of tax breaks for imports, it also wants local manufacturing commitment from the EV maker. Tesla has been non-committal about local construction, which Fisker is now committing to.
