The root cause of hospitalization was ingestion of chemicals found in disposable vapes.

A five-year-old boy was hospitalized after he smoked at a school in Victoria, Australia. Concerned after the incident, her parents called for strict rules to avoid more such incidents. The taste of fruits of vapes tempts children and causes such accidents. The root cause of hospitalization was ingestion of chemicals found in disposable vapes. It was brought to school by a friend of 5 years and belonged to the mother of one of the other friends, who brought it to school to share with her peers. In an interview with the Herald Sun, the boy’s father said, “The innocence about it is very dangerous. His friend brought him to school and told him to suck it because it tastes like grapes. By the time we picked him up from school then Till the vape was empty.”

While the incident took place in the school playground weeks ago, the boy has been suffering from health issues since then. He was taken to the hospital on Friday after coughing and vomiting. It is estimated that over 2 million Australians are using Vapes. The Australian Medical Association (AMA) brought in stringent norms to reduce the use of e-cigarettes to protect smokers and non-smokers, including young children. Vapes containing nicotine can only be obtained legally with a prescription.

In December 2021, Dr. Omar Khorshid, President of the AMA, expressed concern over the misconception that vaping is risk-free compared to smoking, stating that it poses a serious risk to young children. They also wrote to the Australian regulatory agency, the Therapeutic Goods Administration, that there are sites that generate a fake prescription for nicotine vape and promote it as a first-resort smoking cessation therapy, while not officially using it. It is recommended as a last resort.

Dr. Khurshid said that the AMA is concerned about the youth who have been vaping.

Statistics from 2019 show that around 64% of smokers and 20% of non-smokers in the 24-28 age group have tried vaping. The most common reason people cited their curiosity to try e-cigarettes.
