CHENNAI: Following the backlash against the decision to close the kindergarten section in 2,381 government schools, Tamil Nadu school education minister Ambil Mahesh Poyamozhi announced on Thursday that LKG And UKG Classes in these schools will continue with special teachers.
Political parties and educationists had urged the state government to continue the KG classes in these government schools.
“Due to the fall in enrollment in government schools, the previous government had deployed surplus teachers to take classes for LKG and UKG. After the migration of seven lakh students from private schools to government schools last year, the Department of School Education 3,000 Additional sections were introduced,” the minister said in a statement.
He said, “Following the shortage of teachers, surplus teachers taking classes of LKG and UKG teachers were recently shifted to primary schools. The government also made arrangements for continuing education of KG students in Anganwadi centres.”
However, accepting the demands of different sections, the government decided to continue LKG and UKG in government schools as per the advice of the Chief Minister.
“We will appoint special teachers in the vacancies,” Poyamozhi said.
In 2019-20, the state government started LKG and UKG classes in 2,381 Anganwadi centers operating inside government secondary schools on a pilot basis for three years. The department has deployed surplus teachers in primary schools to teach KG students. More than 43,000 students are studying in Montessori method-based pre-primary education.
