The tension between Szafner and Stroll was evident at Aston Martin last season

The news of Otmar Szafnauer joining Alpine is perhaps F1’s worst-kept secret. Rumors about the Romanian-American joining the French outfit began last year and were more or less confirmed when news of his exit from Aston Martin was announced in January. But then came news of former Aston Martin and Racing Point sponsor BWT joining hands with Alpine as title sponsor. Now, just days before Alpine unveils its new 2022 car, Szafnauer has been announced as team principal.

When Marcin Budkowski’s exit was announced by Alpine, Szafner’s move was more or less confirmed. As part of the technical reshuffle, Pat Fry was made the team’s chief technical officer, while Matt Herman was promoted to technical director.

Szafnauer has a wealth of experience and was instrumental in helping the Force India team get through a period of financial uncertainty and enabled the transition to Racing Point and then Aston Martin. But his relationship with Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll was always a fast one, and once Martin Whitmarsh was appointed CEO of Aston Martin Technologies, his time was always running out.

Under Szafnauer, the Silverstone based team has always punched above its weight in its various incarnations, and their expertise will be a great help to the alpine team that seeks to be the team winning the world championship in the next 100 races.

Along with Szafnauer, Alpine has also appointed Bruno Famin as the new executive director of the Viry department which is in charge of the new power unit. Famin was the FIA’s director of operations.

“With Ottmar and Bruno joining the team, we have moved to a new level for 2022. Ottmar will bring his unparalleled experience to motorsports and his unshakable desire to win, while Bruno’s proven track record in manufacturing technologies that competes with the competition. and then shifting to road cars is vital to our project as a sports team and a brand,” said Alpine CEO Laurent Rossi.

The Alpine team has gone through a lot of changes over the past two years. In early 2021, long-time team boss Cyril Abiteboul was fired by Renault Group CEO Luca de Meo. A new structure was implemented under Laurent Rossi, but it also appears to have failed with rising tensions between Marcin Budkowski and sporting director David Brivio, who thought he was hired as team owner. was going. During the year, the team did not have a team principal and that is changing with the arrival of Szafnar which can only be good news for the team.
