Former Pakistan captain hits out at critics over Virat Kohli’s captaincy tenure

Former captain and run machine of the Indian cricket team, Virat Kohli recently revealed that cricket pundits used to call him a ‘failed’ captain.

Kohli, who replaced MS Dhoni as the captain of the Indian Test team in 2014, failed to win an ICC trophy. Also, the Men in Blue finished runners-up in the 2017 Champions Trophy and just barely made it to the semi-finals of the 50-over World Cup in 2019.

Despite Kohli’s extraordinary captaincy tenure and his failure to win a major ICC title, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has hit back at the batting icon’s critics for labeling him as a ‘failed’ captain.

“People who don’t understand the game of cricket very well judge a captain’s performance on the basis of how he has performed in the Champions Trophy or the World Cup. However, if you have a good winning percentage and a good tactical Looks very strong, but isn’t.” won a big tournament, it would not be fair to say you haven’t been a good captain,” Butt said on his YouTube channel.

“There can be some mistakes in high-pressure matches or it can be a matter of luck. Not winning an ICC tournament doesn’t tell us that he [Virat Kohli] Wasn’t a strong leader,” Butt added.

The former Pakistan cricketer played 33 Tests, 24 T20Is and 78 ODIs for his country.

“There is still some room for improvement in Babar Azam’s captaincy. When you see how Virat Kohli led his team in Tests, it was brilliant. He won a lot of matches and even overseas series. However , he couldn’t win a final. When that happens, sometimes it looks like the team hasn’t won the final because of him.”

For the record, as captain of the Indian team in the 50-over format, Kohli won 65 out of 95 matches.
