Former PM Manmohan Singh honored with Lifetime Achievement Honor in UK

Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh was recently honored with the Lifetime Achievement Honor by the India-UK Achievers Honors in London for his contribution to economic and political life.

The honour, announced at an award ceremony last week, will be handed over to Dr Singh in New Delhi by the National Indian Students and Alumni Association (NISAU) UK at a later date.

India-UK Achievers Honors by Nissau UK in partnership with the British Council in India and the UK’s Department for Foreign Affairs international trade (DIT), celebrates the achievements of Indian students studying in British universities and the Lifetime Achievement honor is a nod to Dr Singh’s academic achievements at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge.

“I am deeply touched by this sentiment, especially coming from young people who are the future of our country and the relationship between our two countries,” Dr Singh said in a written message.

“The India-UK relationship is truly defined in particular by our educational partnership. Our nation’s founding fathers, Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, Dr BR Ambedkar, Sardar Patel and many others studied in the UK and went on to become great Became a leader. A legacy that continues to inspire India and the world. For countless years Indian student Got the opportunity to study in the UK,” said the 90-year-old economist, who served as prime minister from 2004-2014.

To mark 75 years of India’s independence, the first India UK Achievers Honors features 75 high achievers and some of the most outstanding achievers who strengthen the India-UK diaspora living bridge.

British Indian peer Lord Karan Bilimoria received the Living Legend honor at the awards ceremony on 25 January.

Bilimoria, patron of NISAU UK, said: “All award winners are living bridges that are talked about by both countries. Their achievements create inspiration here in the UK and in India.”

Opposition Labor Party MP Virendra Sharma, another patron of Nissau UK, was also honored with the Living Legend honour.

Sharma said, “India and the UK are natural allies, partners and friends. What was once a relationship based on exploitation is now a partnership of equals represented by democracy, industry and technology.”

According to NISAU UK, a large number of nominations went through a rigorous selection process by an eminent jury, which shortlisted India’s 75 top achievers and eight outstanding achievers.

“Working on Honors has been an unforgettable experience for the NISAU UK team. We always knew the work of Indian graduates from British universities was extraordinary, but I don’t think we even realized how much it was changing the world ,” said Sanam Arora, president of Nissau UK.

Those honored include Bollywood actress Parineeti Chopra, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) spokesperson Raghav Chadha, Serum Institute of India CEO Adar Poonawalla and Indian women’s football team goalkeeper Aditi Chauhan.
