Former Sri Lankan finance minister Basil Rajapaksa leaves for US: Reports – Times of India

Colombo: Sri Lankaformer finance minister Tulsi Rajapaksa Left for the US on Friday to receive medical treatment a week later Supreme court Media reports said that he has been allowed to travel abroad till January 15.
The Daily Mirror Lanka newspaper quoted officials as saying that Basil Rajapaksa, the younger brother of ousted President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, left for Dubai on an Emirates flight from Katunayake airport, from where he would catch a connecting flight to the US.
On September 2, a five-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Jayanta Jayasuriya of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka allowed 71-year-old Tulsi to travel abroad till January 15 next year to receive medical treatment.
The Supreme Court gave this order in respect of a Fundamental Rights petition filed by Sri Lanka swimmer and coach julian bowlingThe Mirror report said Chandra Jayaratne, former president of the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce, Transparency International and Jahan Canaga Retna.
The petitioners are seeking an order to take legal action against Tulsi and his elder brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa for financial irregularities and mismanagement of Sri Lanka’s economy.
In July, Basil was barred from leaving Sri Lanka at the Bandaranaike International Airport here after protests by passengers and officials.
Tulsi was forced to resign from the government led by his elder brother in April amid the worst economic crisis facing Sri Lanka due to a severe foreign exchange crunch.
Earlier this month, Gotabaya Rajapaksa was given special security for housing and a state bungalow on his return to Sri Lanka from Thailand, where he fled amid months of major protests over the country’s worst economic crisis.
