The Supreme Court on Monday appointed former apex court judge Justice RV Raveendran as mediator to settle a family property dispute involving businessman and former IPL chief Lalit Modi and his mother Bina Modi.

A bench headed by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana advised both the parties to the matter with an open mind to go for mediation and settle the dispute without any pre-conditions.

Both sides of the dispute, represented by senior advocates Harish Salve and Kapil Sibal, had informed the court on July 28 that earlier attempts to settle the issues through mediation had failed.

The apex court had on December 16 last year taken the concurrence of the rival parties and appointed former apex court judges – Justices Vikramjit Sen and Kurian Joseph – to mediate and help find an amicable solution.

The court directed that the parties should maintain confidentiality of the arbitration proceedings and should not share any information on social media.

The bench, also comprising Justices Krishna Murari and Hema Kohli, was hearing Lalit Modi’s appeal against the decision of a division bench of the Delhi High Court that the arbitration injunction suit filed against him by Bina Modi, wife of late industrialist KK Modi, was filed against him. The son was maintainable.
