Formula E and the FIA revealed the first-ever Gen3 electric race car at the Yacht Club de Monaco ahead of this weekend’s Monaco E-Prix. The all-electric Gen3 car builds on the Gen1 and current Gen2 cars powering the championship. Formula E Gen3 car to use sustainable materials in its construction with end-of-life plan
Formula E says the Gen3 car is the pinnacle of high performance, efficiency and stability. The arrival of the Gen3 car advances software engineering in motorsport innovation. Car upgrades will be delivered directly to the in-car operating system in the form of software updates. The Gen3 car is also the fastest with a top speed of 322 kmph. It is also the most efficient, with over 40 percent of the energy used within a race produced by regenerative braking.
The electric motor of the Gen3 formula car achieves around 95 percent power efficiency and can deliver up to 350 kW or 470 bhp. The Gen3 car is also the first with both front and rear powertrains. The front powertrain adds 250 kW, the rear 350 kW, doubling the regenerative capacity on the Gen2 model for a total of 600 kW. The new electric formula car will also be capable of ultra-high speed charging at 600 kW for extra power during the race. The Gen3 car will also be the first of its kind to feature no hydraulic brakes and the front powertrain will offer regenerative capability.

The Gen3 car will also largely use sustainable materials. It extends to tire, battery and bodywork manufacturing with life cycle thinking. Formula E organizers say the batteries contain sustainably sourced minerals while the battery cells will be reused and recycled at the end of life. Meanwhile, linen and recycled carbon fiber will be used in bodywork construction for the first time in a Formula car, featuring recycled carbon fiber from retired Gen2 cars and reducing the total amount of virgin carbon fiber used. All waste carbon fiber will be reused for new applications through the adoption of an innovative process from the aviation industry. Ultimately, natural rubber and recycled fibers will make up 26 percent of the new Gen3 tires and all tires will be fully recycled after racing.
