Four Gujarat villages boycott polls over lack of development

Voters in four villages of Gujarat’s Mehsana district said they are boycotting the elections as there has been no development in their areas.

Becharaji taluka Bariaf village and three villages in Kheralu taluka claimed on Monday that their issues were unresolved for decades and hence they were not participating in the polling exercise.

Not a single vote was cast in these four villages till 1 pm.

Bariaf village sarpanch Raju Patel told local media, “About half a dozen issues were pending for decades, nothing has been done even after several reminders and individual requests. For example, in three decades the water resources department certified Ground water was not potable, old borewells were sealed but new borewells were not developed.

“The primary school was developed in 1968, it needs regularization and renovation. For three terms, the sarpanch has taken up the matter with the concerned authorities in turn, but there was no result, Narmada water did not reach the village.

Patel, on behalf of 1,000 villagers, has said that the villagers have boycotted the polls and staged protests. “We will vote only if the Mehsana district collector gives a written undertaking to resolve the pending issues,” he said.

Villagers of Varethna, Dalisana and Davol in Kheralu taluka have also boycotted the polls. Their demand was to revive the Rupen river and fill the village lakes with Narmada or other voters.
