Madrid:
Two ultralight planes collided near an airport in northeastern Spain on Sunday, regional authorities said, killing four passengers.
Catalonia’s regional government said firefighters doused the plane in a wooded area near Moia airport, north of Barcelona, after being alerted by a witness who saw it lose altitude and crash Is.
“After the fire was extinguished, firefighters found two lifeless bodies inside the ultralight (aircraft),” it said in a statement.
Several hours later firefighters found a second damaged aircraft with two dead inside about 300 meters (984 ft) from the first.
Officials believe the two planes collided mid-air.
Police and civil aviation authorities have launched an investigation into the accident.
