Monkeys worth Rs 1.10 crore seized from Siliguri bound bus in Moynaguri

Four monkeys smuggled from Indonesia were rescued in West Bengal’s Jalpaiguri district, officials said on Wednesday.

Acting on a tip-off, the customs said monkeys worth Rs 1.10 crore were seized from a Siliguri bound bus at Moynaguri.

The bus was coming from Assam.

Chief wildlife warden Debal Roy told PTI that the monkeys rescued on May 9 are being treated at the Bengal Safari Zoo in Siliguri’s Salugara.

He said the four primates were in a highly dehydrated condition but are now stable and under the care of a team of veterinarians.

“Unfortunately, the animal smugglers could not be caught,” he said.

Mr Roy said that the Forest Department is working in close coordination with Customs and Police to prevent smuggling of wildlife through the Assam-North Bengal Corridor.

He said that it is not yet decided whether the monkeys will be kept in the zoo or will be released in the wild after treatment.
