Foxconn Food Poisoning Case: Factory Staff Blocks Highway; Police detained activists

Scores of employees of Foxconn Technology India Pvt Ltd protested on the Chennai-Bengaluru highway after around 150 workers at the iPhone maker’s factory were hospitalized for food poisoning. Police on Sunday detained hundreds of people for blocking highways, according to Reuters news agency.

According to Chennai Police, food poisoning led to protests Foxconn factory workers and their relatives, who blocked the Chennai-Bengaluru highway for several hours.

“There was an outbreak of acute diarrheal disease among the employees of Foxconn,” a statement from the Tiruvallur district administration said. It said 256 workers were treated as outpatients and 159 were hospitalised, of which 155 have already been discharged.

“Around 70 women and 22 men have been detained for blocking the highway since Saturday,” the news agency reported.

Foxconn is a Taiwanese multinational electronics contract manufacturer that manufactures iPhones for Apple Inc.
