freedom for all

President Draupadi Murmu’s address to the nation on the eve of 75 years of India’s independence, marking the beginning of an auspicious phase, good for our emergence as an economy and emphasis on inclusion as a promise was. We measure progress. “The country’s development is becoming more inclusive and regional inequalities are also reducing,” he said, underlining the progress we have made on gender equality. We have indeed come a long way on several key parameters that add up to significant potential.

Nevertheless, the challenges we face on inclusive growth still stand. Deep caste inequalities still haunt us which can affect the story of India’s rise. On 20 July, a school student in Rajasthan, who was nine years old, being a Dalit, was beaten up so badly for touching a pot of water to satisfy the thirst of an upper caste, as reported that he had to lose his life as a result. Reports of atrocities fueled by age-old notions of exclusion are a reminder that many lives free, bound by attitudes we have resolved to eradicate. While we clearly have much to be proud of and look forward to, we should not reduce our vigil on freedom for all.
