The first day of the French Open 2022 saw a major upset when world No. 6 Jabeur was knocked out in the first round. The Tunisian star lost to Poland’s Magda Linet 6-3, 6-7 (4-7), 5-7 at Roland Garros on Sunday, 22 May.

Magda broke Jaboor early in the first set, but the 27-year-old made a spectacular comeback to win the first set in 37 minutes. The second set turned cliff-hanger as we went to the tie-breaker, but it was Lynette who held her nerve to come trump in 59 minutes.

The third set was about Jabeur’s attempt to play catch-up as Lynette hardly allowed her opponent to set the conditions. Unexpected errors flowed in from Jabeur, who could not execute some of the shots he would have done in his sleep on other days.

Jabeur took out 10 more aces than Lynette’s one, but this was not enough for him to qualify for the next round. Jabeur came into the tournament, winning 17 matches on clay and becoming the only player to qualify for three clay-court finals.

She also became the first Arab woman to win a WTA 1000 title after defeating Jessica Pegula in the final of the Madrid Open. She also played in the final of the Italian Open where she lost in straight sets to world No. 1 Inga Swietec.

Prior to the start of the French Open, Jabeur was on the verge of becoming the first Arab woman to win a Grand Slam, keeping her form in mind. But after losing to world number 52 Lynette, this will no longer happen.
