Sometimes, it becomes difficult to understand what is fake and what is true, especially thanks to social media algorithms. Even the best of us can fall prey to misinformation and a recent news item is perhaps the most hilarious example of this. French scientist Etienne Klein shared a picture on Twitter of what he believed to be ‘Proxima Centauri’ or the closest star to the Sun. Later, it was revealed that the image was nothing but a piece of flesh! Here’s a look at the viral tweet:

Etienne Klein claimed that the image taken by the James Webb Telescope had greatly expanded a star that was hitherto unknown. “Photo of Proxima Centauri, the closest star to the Sun, located at a distance of 4.2 light-years from us. It was taken by JWST. This level of detail … the detection of a new world day by day walks,” wrote Scientist In his tweet in French. The post has so far garnered 20.4k likes and 6.4k retweets since it was shared. Earlier the pictures taken with the telescope broke the internet.
Later, it was revealed that the picture of Proxima Centauri was nothing but a piece of Spanish meat called chorizo. It is basically a sausage made from minced pork and smoked for a savory taste. Etienne Klein adopted the same formula to apologize for his mistaken identity. “Well, when it’s time for aperitifs, cognitive biases have a field day … Be careful, then, of them. According to contemporary cosmologyNothing related to Spanish charcuterie exists anywhere on Earth,” he wrote.
He further acknowledged that it was important to cross-check the information before further sharing. “Let us learn to be as careful with the arguments of authority as with the innate eloquence of some images,” he said. to keep track:

Twitter users were left in splits after a hilarious faux pas by a French scientist. Thousands of people gave their reactions in the comments section. “This is really a piece of chorizo. Astronomy prank,” wrote one user, while another added, “It’s cool that there’s still humor in the middle of the universe!” One user sarcastically commented, “Details on James Webb”. Telescope is unprecedented. Will enjoy future results on my breakfast time Twitter reviews!” Several Twitter users also shared their images of tortillas or olives, claiming they were stars or supermoons.
